Welcome Delaney Laing and Payton Margaret!

Tyler and I welcomed our little girls, Delaney Laing and Payton Margaret, on April 9th at 9:25am (Delaney) and 9:26am (Payton).

I had a scheduled c-section and Tyler and I left for the hospital at 5:45am that morning. Good thing I wasn't in labor, because I put the wrong address into our drop-off location and it took us a few extra minutes to get there...oops! We still managed to arrive on time and thankfully were taking back to our prep area right away, unlike when I gave birth to Logan and had to wait 12 hours to be admitted to a room! On the home front, Nana stayed with Logan and then came to the hospital and then Uncle Josh stayed with Logan until Sharnel arrived.

The nurses started getting me prepped and started monitoring the girls, which was nice to see and Tyler started getting into his scrubs. It was rather funny watching Tyler try to get into these scrubs...he ended up ripping them through the crotch and had to just tie them around his waste because he was so tall and didn't fit into them!  Throughout the last 8 weeks of my pregnancy, I went in every Monday for non-stress tests to do fetal monitoring and it was always a challenge as the girls' heart rates were so, so similar and they had a struggle picking up both of them. The same thing happened on the morning of the 9th, but it totally freaked us out because it took a lot longer to pick up our baby A's heartbeat (ie Delaney's). Eventually, they found her heartbeat and we were back on track.

I was scheduled for 8:15am but we didn't end up going in until about 8:45am and it took about 25 minutes to prep me. I've never had a major surgery, so I didn't know exactly what to expect. The only nerve-wracking part was being wheeled into the operating room and seeing the operating table laid out like you were going to receive a lethal injection at the state penitentiary. Outside of that, the actual procedure was super straightforward and the girls were out within 15 minutes of us starting the surgery. It was SUCH A RELIEF to finally have them out where we could see them.

Delaney weighed in at 6 pounds 5 ounces and measured 19.5 inches and Payton weighted in at 5 pounds 13 ounces and measured 19 inches. Both girls struggled with their breathing and had a lot of amniotic fluid stuck in their lungs. Apparently, it's really common for c-section babies to have this since it doesn't get expelled like how it does when babies are born vaginally. As a result, our little ones were taken to the nursery and then the NICU to spend the day to be monitored. It took about 45 minutes to stitch me all up and then I was in a post-op room for two hours until the wheeled me into our postpartum room. I spent the day just recovering and sadly didn't get to really hold my babies until 5:30pm when they were discharged from the NICU. That was the only crappy part was having to wait to see them.

I spent the evening snuggling them and we just hung out. Unfortunately, there were no private rooms on our first night, so Tyler had to head home around 10pm. And when he left, the nurses came to get me to practice walking since it was 12 hours post-surgery. Those first few steps were incredibly painful, but I was so happy to get up and moving. I managed to get some sleep (ie 4 hours) and just spent the time snuggling my little ones in bed. Everything was going great until I noticed Delaney's color change and she started having the breathing problems again. I called the nurses for help and then came in and whisked her away to the nursery and she spent most of the day being monitored again. B about 1:30pm, we got notified that a private room had opened up, so we packed up our stuff and headed to our new room, which made the stay SO MUCH better. For starters, I could control the AC, which my roommate the previous night wouldn't let me or the nurses turn it on....the nurses were sweating in our room if they had to do anything and I slept with 4 ice packs on my body! We also had a sink and a fridge and there was a pull out bed for Tyler to sleep on. The other nice part was the room was across from the showers. We spent another two nights in the hospital before getting discharged on Friday, April 12th. I'll do another post on our actual stay in the hospital and going home....this post is long enough for now!
