Welcome Logan John Holland!

On July 19th at 11:23am, Logan John Holland made his grand appearance and Tyler and I couldn't have been more elated. Logan weighed in at 8 pounds 9 ounces and originally was measured at 20.25 inches, which Tyler thought was too short. And daddy was right! Logan's pediatrician confirmed he was actually 21.5 inches along :)

Overall, we had a pretty smooth birth, but ended up having to wait over 12 hours to get admitted to the hospital the day before. I had felt less fetal movement and was experiencing itchiness on the bottoms of my feet, which can be a sign of fetal distress when combined with other indicators. We called our doctor and because I was already 40 weeks and five days, they had us come to the hospital and let us know that they were likely going to admit and induce me.
On our way to the hospital the first time!

We arrived at the hospital at 8:15am and hung out in the waiting room. It ended up being one of the busiest days of the year and the hospital ended up diverting other patients because they had no beds. After waiting 4 hours, our doctor told us to go home for a few hours and she'd call us when she thought a bed was going to open up. So, we headed back on the subway and hung out at home for a few hours, which was really nice. We then went back to the hospital at 4:30pm and ended up waiting for another 4.5 hours before we were finally admitted to triage at 9pm.

Relieved to have been admitted to triage

While in triage, I started getting contractions, which was a good sign and then we were finally moved to our own room at midnight.

It was then that they started me on pitocin to speed up my contractions and that's when the real fun began. I was doing okay through each contraction and the nurse asked if I wanted an epidural; at that point, I didn't need one and was able to manage the pain. However, things really kicked into high gear and my contractions were roughly two minutes apart and extremely painful. I asked for an epidural but the problem was someone else asked before me, so I was delayed by 30 minutes....woof! The anesthesiologist finally arrived but didn't get the epidural right the first time, so I had to go through the whole process again while having contractions....I could have killed her! Thankfully, the epidural worked quickly and I was able to relax and actually get a few hours of sleep, which was a miracle.

This was after my nap - I felt like a reasonably new person all things considered.

At about 8am, they thought I was about ~2 hours away from pushing and wanted to wait for my doctor to get out of delivering a baby via c-section. They said we'd start pushing at about 10:30-11am and that it could be a few hours from them before the baby would be delivered. Turns out I knew how to effectively push (thanks to all the ab workouts at Orange Theory!) and pushed for 25 minutes total and then Logan arrived! We were so relieved that it went quick but also that our doctor could deliver Logan; she had worked a full 24 hour shift and stayed on just so she could deliver him. I was very eager to hear how big Logan was and when the nurse said "8 pounds 9 ounces" I responded with, "that's it?!" My doctor as well as the nurses couldn't help but laugh as that's a pretty big baby...thankfully, Logan ended up being much smaller than Tyler and I anticipated!

After about 1 hour of getting cleaned up and hanging out as a family of three, my mom, brother, and brother's girlfriend came to visit us :)

 Logan and Kaitlin
Josh was a doll and went out and got me a delicious turkey sandwich...I hadn't eaten in about 15 hours and was starving...not to mention, I had been craving a turkey sandwich!
All cleaned up and ready to go
As you can see, Tyler was pretty excited about becoming a daddy :)

My mom and brother left for a few hours so that Tyler and I could relax and hang out with the baby. They came back for dinner and to keep me company so Tyler could head home and get some sleep. Josh knew I desperately wanted sushi, so he had it delivered to the hospital....it was amazing!
When my mom and Josh arrived, I was doing skin-to-skin bonding with Logan and I asked Josh if he wanted to hold Logan and do skin-to-skin. Josh said, "sure" but didn't realize he needed to take off his shirt to do skin-to-skin. He thought my mom and I were pranking him...needless to say, it was a pretty hilarious exchange :)
