2021 Valentine

By now, you know that I love making valentines each year. What started out as a small craft project, has turned into quite the production. I love the "hunt" in finding creative and witty valentines to make and spend most of my January weekends working on them. It actually gives me something to look forward to after the holidays and makes my least favorite month go quicker. This year, I wanted to make etch-a-sketch valentines that also scratch off. I initially thought I could buy scratch off labels, but I couldn't find anything large enough to cover my note. So, I did DIY scratch offs and it actually worked. Below is the step-by-step for how I made these. And here are some from over the years: few of my favorites from the past few: 2012, 2013, 2014 (friends one), 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020.

Here are the supplies I purchased:

I started first putting the white hearts on the cardstock, but then decided to print the notes first and then put the hearts on. You can do it either way, but I found it easier to print my note without having the hearts on first.

I printed a little note on each card and centered it on the cardstock.

Next, I put clear packing tape over the note. This is really important so your scratch off actually works!

Next, mix 1 tablespoon silver paint and 2 tablespoons of dish soap together.

Paint directly over the clear tape. After doing several of these, I found the thinner the paint, the better it dries. Yes, it requires multiple coats, but that way the paint doesn't crack.

Here's my assembly line of painting...I ended up making about 75 of these between our friends/family, Logan's class, and my direct reports!

Write "scratch me!" on the bottom so folks know to scratch off the paint and read your note.
