Oh Hurricane Sandy

Thank you to everyone who called, texted, or emailed us to check-in after the wake of Hurricane Sandy...It really meant a lot to Tyler and me :) I was working in India when the storm hit, or as Tyler likes to refer to it as "ditching your husband in the face of natural disaster!" Thankfully, the Upper West Side where our apartment is didn't experience any flooding or power outages. Other areas in the city, New Jersey, Staten Island, etc. weren't as lucky and the damage is pretty extreme. Here's a picture courtesy of Farfield Police Department of my beach house from college (on the right) and the bar we always went to on the left. It's crazy how high the water got. All students have been evacuated and the university is trying to find housing with alumni and local residents as the beach houses are destroyed.

I flew in yesterday from India and couldn't believe the 2 mile gas line at the pump at 4am in New Jersey or how dark so much of the city was despite the hurricane taking place 5+ days. After unpacking and doing laundry, I headed out with a friend to volunteer on the Lower Eastside where the storm was particularly bad. Fortunately/unfortunately, the organization we went to volunteer at had so many volunteers that they didn't end up needing our help; it was amazing to see how many people dropped everything to come and volunteer.

Tyler is in Austin for a rugby tournament this weekend, so I spent the rest of the weekend trying to catch up on my life before I head out on Tuesday to speak at a conference in New Orleans. Our Christmas cards arrived (so exciting!) while I was gone so I spent time getting those organized and put together the baby shower invitations I made for my sister-in-law's baby shower. I will definitely have to post pictures of the invitations and shower when the time comes...don't want to ruin all of the surprises! Hope everyone had a great weekend :)
